As someone who very recently joined the unfortunate ranks of the unemployed, I have become increasingly frustrated by Craigslist’s lack of verification in the “Jobs” category. I have used it to search for employment, and have been lucky enough to find some legitimate prospects, but to do so I had to wade through a veritable ocean of crap.

Many of these, I have now discovered, have been set up to gain contact lists for telemarketing firms. How incredibly unethical. In a time when this country is struggling with 10% unemployment (how’s that economic stimulus working out for you, Obama?) I think it’s petty and cruel to prey upon the hopes and needs of people who are facing eviction or foreclosure due to their loss of a job.

I would hope anyone reading this would join me in encouraging Craigslist to implement a verification policy for their employment classifieds. No one should have to worry about spam and marketing calls when they’re already trying to keep their heads above water.
